Essentials for your Estonian accent - a not-so scientific approach to linguistics

Dear Estonians, please do not feel like I am making fun of you with this. I love you, I love your language and I love your accent. I have noticed that when I have a longer conversation with you in English, I fall into a similar accent. And the scientist that I am, with two semesters of linguistics on my CV, I am now simply analyzing what makes this unique accent. Of course, there are great generational differences. Younger people tend to have a lighter accent and struggle less with the different sentence structure and grammar. But if you listen closely, you can still hear it… Dear Germans, I’m sorry that this isn’t available in your language – but you gotta understand that that would make no sense. So, here are some basic rules that will make you sound Estonian when you speak English: a)      The randomized distribution of articles. As Estonian doesn’t have articles, it’s sometimes hard to tell when to use them and when not. So you will drop sentences like „Could yo...

Zwischen Palmen und Plastikmüll

Es gibt sie noch, die letzten Paradiese, wo man leere Sandstrände findet, Palmen mit Schaukeln dran direkt am Ufer, wo man sich vor herunterfallenden Kokosnüssen in Acht nehmen muss, Einheimische auf dem Fahrrad oder dem Moped über einsame Straßen fahren und das Meer türkisblau, klar und badewannenwarm ist. In so ein Paradies will ich. Martin Schacht hat Recht, wenn er über Transporte spricht: Es mag chaotisch wirken in Thailand, aber es klappt immer. Man kann sich darauf verlassen, dass einen immer jemand erwartet und man immer irgendwie ans Ziel kommt. Schon beim Einsteigen in den Bus werde ich gefragt, auf welche Insel ich möchte, und die Stewardess verspricht, sich um ein Taxi zum Hafen zu kümmern. Dann schmeißt sie mich und die anderen farang an einer Straße mitten im Nirgendwo aus dem Bus. Erst sind wir irritiert, wir sind doch noch gar nicht in Trat, wo sich der Hafen befindet. Aber tatsächlich wartet ein Sammeltaxi auf uns, denn von hier ist es kürzer zum Pier. ...

A Year in Estonia: Autumn. Sügis. Herbst.

I had thought that it would be terrible when the people come back, but like every proper Tartu citizen, I love it. Tartu is once more how it is supposed to be. What was going on? Summer is over. Now that more than 70% of Estonians are vaccinated against Covid-19 (in our institute even more than 90%), the universities are opening their doors again. I have been working in the summer, too, constantly learning, and I had a presentation about my research at an international conference for the first time. I am also prepared for winter: I have dried herbs for teas, stacked firewood in the shed, picked berries, made jam, and froze bag after bag of blueberries, and marinated mushrooms. Fall is coming. The first of September is the first day of school for everybody. The school kids are wearing their finest clothes...
